The simplicity and subtlety of mark making is at the centre of my work, combined with a love for detail. Taking the form of intricate pencil and pen drawings, whilst also exploring both analogue and digital photography, my drawings are representations of the way that I have perceived a place. Each mark has a sense of permanence – the drawings not only show my interpretation of a place, but also show a journey of the process by which they were made. Drawing within the landscape is something that I have taken an interest in – it is impossible to see everything at once, in the way that a camera can. Subconscious decisions about what to include are therefore constantly being made – horizon lines, buildings and natural forms are all of importance to me. With careful consideration of composition, the drawings are framed by their negative space, emphasising the perspective and focus of the scene. Using both drawing and photography, my work further explores the different ways in which each medium can be used to document moments in time. Combining these two mediums within a single piece demonstrates this; a photograph stops time, whereas drawing encompasses it.
