Theories of forgiveness are certainly broad and varied, stretching across wars, arguments and self-criticism. While the concept itself is vast and multifarious, my practice aims to break down this complexity and understand the fundamental components that come together to construct forgiveness, regardless of context. Simultaneously, I strive to challenge the manner in which we refer to forgiveness. Overuse of the word ‘forgive’ has saturated our understanding of true forgiveness; the practice, time and effort required to achieve it as well as the infinite(?) variations of genuine forgiveness. By focusing the audience’s attention on the theme, I hope to encourage intentionality. Through calm, meditative compositions of imperfect repetition and symbolic organic textures, such as tea and rocks, the work creates a space for contemplation, while contrasts in pace, control and material question what constitutes genuine forgiveness.
