Shinrin-yoku
‘Shinrin-yoku’ is a collection inspired by a Japanese practice also known as “forest bathing” which is believed to improve mental and physical health through the pheromones produced by forested areas. My intent was to make a womenswear collection exploring walking garments. Specifically, women with historical significance in literature, designing through their descriptive language and taking silhouettes from the garments they would have worn in the 1940s. The first woman I am inspired by is Anaïs Nin, she describes the urban streets of Paris. The second woman inspiring my collection is Anna (Nan) Shepherd who walked across the Cairngorms in natural environments. By create a series of walking poncho garments that have elements of pleats and draping that also hugs the feminine form. I was fortunate enough to have offcuts of fabrics from Paramo and Finisterre, these brands are most well known for their waterproof jacket fabric. This collection will be completely ethically sourced from deadstock YKK trims and fastenings.

This project is dedicated to my grandad, any trims and designs are in memory of him. All materials have been gifted to me from Berghaus, a walking company based in the U.K. as my project is about hiking and walking. Upcycling will be my main way of pattern cutting and construction. The processes may consist of patchwork, stitchery on the Irish embroidery machine and vinyl. Colours and trims such as pockets will depend on the garments I have available to me and the only new material is 50% recycled polyester.

Raleigh is a brand that was founded in Nottingham by Sir Frank Bowdenin 1887. After a bad spell of health, he decided to make bikes for the commuter on their way to work. Raleigh remains to be one of the biggest bike companies in the world. In the 1920s it was normal to wear a suit on your bike to work, the only mode of transport to work was to cycle. Safety features for the volume of cars on the road in the modern era. Reversible to turn the lining into a tailored garment.
