The Black Country
The world presents a chaotic mix of have and have nots, of aspiration and apathy, of hopes and dreams captured through your phone screen. A world where permanence has been replaced by the disposable. The elaborate and grandiose; a fugazi. Nothing ever truly able to confer a feeling of place, we are constantly in transit moving towards the streets where a few days back there were riots here. We give in to the inhospitality of clothing in which one is constantly under surveillance by both CCTV and the passer-by. Growing up within the Black Country an area of the West Midlands named synonymously for its association to the soot and smog from the industrial revolution, the visible remnants of subjects to a downward spiral of social exclusion have left a patina. Spray painted walls mark liminal zones of registered personal existence. This considered, the Black Country remains an area known for its hard-work and the raw nature of unbothered circumstance.
My clothing brand 'Systems' is a design language, dissecting the dichotomy between practicality versus aesthetics, instead reconsidering mobility, protection and communication as vital input tools for design and ultimately survival. Designing for the expansion into non-spaces and for the nomad that moves around the periphery of our awareness. Responding to the world around us. Systems in both a physical sense, the modularity and a societal sense, the stereotypes and codes we follow on a daily basis. Through the brand, the products intend to solve systemic problems in society through modular solutions, working towards a highly sustainable model that's both hyper consequential & fully transparent in its design. Products that are able to evolve yearly. This is not about quick changes, no instant gratification, rather about slowing down both the fashion cycle and you as the user.
Modularity & Materiality
Take the garment and construct, deconstruct, reconstruct. Choose your visibility and where you want to share your details. Question the significance of your ‘system’ and consider how reconfiguring it will create new solutions. It is fundamental to input new pieces in areas you had not considered, it is vital to make mistakes. Take time with your creation and when the weather conditions change reconsider how you can change your system.
A Working Construction
‘Systems’ intends to be a fully open-source and hyper-consequential clothing brand using a yearly model that will evolve yearly considering the life cycle of the garment thus becoming timeless styles and not trends. The modular and multi-functional garments encourage a buy less, buy better design philosophy while promoting individualist androgynous fashion. It is my aim to run a “build-a-wear” concept pop-up store whereby customers can fully assemble the pieces of their choosing and run as an experience with the aim for customers to create longevity by further appreciating their creations. Ultimately, over time the collection will expand with new modular pieces yearly that can be integrated. Stay updated via my social media channels attached.
